SAP Fiori and SAP UI5 – Beginner’s Guide – Part 1

SAP Fiori and SAP UI5 – Beginner’s Guide – Part 1

As you all know by now, the time has come to evolve our technical skill set beyond the normal ABAP, and towards where SAP is heading, i.e. web, mobility and cloud. There are so much freely available information and courses to help us make the transition. In following series we will go through all the necessary topics, one by one, making our transition path as simple and easy as possible.

The Basic Necessity ! – Web Technology Skill Set

HTML, CSS, Javascript and JQuery form the core of UI5 (whom derivation based on HTML5) for better understanding of custom UI5 and SAP Fiori applications. Following are the websites that provide total in-depth of the underlying technologies and its really a good idea to begin our series learning the syntax and behavior of these technologies.

W3Schools ( HTML, CSS, Javascript, JQuery )
– ( previously )
Codecademy ( HTML & CSS, Javascript, jQuery )

A Quick Learn – Browser Debuggers

Each browser have it’s own debugger, but I prefer to use Google Chrome because of its features. Following are the links to major browser debuggers :

Google Chrome F12 Developer Tools
– Internet Explorer F12 Developer Tools
Safari Developer Tools
Firebug for Firefox

Understand RESTful APIs

REST is the underlying architectural principle of the web. The amazing thing about the web is the fact that clients (browsers) and servers can interact in complex ways without the client knowing anything beforehand about the server and the resources it hosts. The key constraint is that the server and client must both agree on the media used, which in the case of the web is HTML.

A REST API should spend almost all of its descriptive effort in defining the media type(s) used for representing resources and driving application state, or in defining extended relation names and/or hypertext-enabled mark-up for existing standard media types.
